10 Top Tips for Getting the most from your Kiln-Dried logs

1. Store your logs in a dry, airy space.

Even kiln-dried logs can absorb moisture if left out in the rain. Keep them off the ground, under cover, and with plenty of airflow. A log store with open sides and a solid roof is ideal.

2. Bring your logs indoors before burning.

If possible, move a few logs inside 24 hours before you use them. This helps stabilise temperature and ensures they’re perfectly dry when you light your fire.

3. Always use kindling to start your fire.

Small, dry kindling sticks or natural firelighters create the right base heat for kiln-dried logs to catch quickly and burn evenly.

4. Check your stove or fireplace airflow.

Good airflow = good combustion. Make sure your air vents are fully open when lighting and adjust gradually once the fire is established.

5. Don’t overload your stove.

Kiln-dried logs burn hotter and longer than unseasoned wood, so you need fewer logs per burn. Overfilling can overheat your stove and waste fuel.

6. Choose the right log size for your appliance.

If logs are too large, they restrict airflow; too small, they burn too fast. Woodstock UK offers standard and stove-cut sizes check your appliance’s manual for ideal dimensions.

7. Keep your chimney or flue clean.

Dry wood burns efficiently and produces minimal creosote, but regular sweeping (at least once a year) keeps your system safe and efficient.

8. Mix species for perfect performance.

Hardwoods like oak and ash burn long and hot, while birch lights quickly for a bright flame. A mix gives you easy ignition and sustained warmth.

9. Use a stove thermometer.

It helps you monitor the optimal burn temperature preventing wasted heat and protecting your stove from damage caused by over- or under-firing.

10. Reorder early in the season.

Beat the winter rush! Stock up in autumn for best prices, quicker delivery slots, and perfectly conditioned wood ready for the cold months ahead.
